Use incentives to keep manufacturing

Howard Ashlock's May 10 letter, “Import cars, why not medicine?” in regard to importing prescription medicines is right on target. Consumers are forced to buy imported products, often with no options.
Howard and I were part of a work force at a Cedar Rapids factory. The work force dwindled from repeated buyouts and mismanagement with no concern for loyal, long-term employees. Many were forced to retire before they wanted to. Is there a pattern here? What happened to Cherry Burrell, Harnischfeger, FMC, Cryovac, Square D, Goss?
We export jobs as well as ag equipment, corn and soybeans.
I have a dream. What if our local leaders would offer the same amount of TIFs, taxpayer money, and private investment money toward potential factories in Cedar Rapids that has been directed to the convention center, amphitheater, downtown revitalization and incentives to build grandiose office buildings?
Some of these incentives could be directed toward creating permanent jobs in manufacturing for some skilled workers. Ya think?
