Rhame, Robert James
Robert James Rhame, 61, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Mercy Medical Center, Sunday, Sept. 27, 2010. Memorial services: 3:30 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Heather Hayes. The family will greet visitors at the church after 2:30 p.m. Friday. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; children, Joel Rhame of Iowa City, and Laurel Rhame of Cedar Rapids; his father, John Rhame II of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; a sister, Kathy (Norm) Marquis of Evansville, Ind.; brothers, John (Kay) Rhame III of Portage, Ind., and Daniel (Cathy) Rhame of Wheaton, Ill.; and many nieces, nephews and loved cousins.
Bob was preceded in death by his mother.
Bob was born Dec. 5, 1948, in Raleigh Durham, N.C., to John and Ruth Steinke Rhame II. He married Barbara Pearson in Iowa City, on July 6, 1985. Bob was a systems engineer for Rockwell Collins for the last 30 years. Bob was an Air Force veteran of Vietnam.
Bob Rhame was a terrific father, a patient and loving husband, a great brother and a famously interesting and funny friend. He was a gifted chef and gardener, wine connoisseur, bridge player and raconteur. His dry sense of humor constantly bewildered and amused his family and friends. Bob loved public TV, Bill Moyers, a good political discussion and a fine display of fireworks.
The family was overwhelmed by the generosity of spirit and professional care shown to them by the staff of the Oncology floor at Mercy Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Perrine Oncology Center in Robert's name.
Please leave a tribute or memory for the family on the webpage at under obituaries.
