To the editor:
I traveled to Des Moines recently as part of a group of volunteers for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network to meet with lawmakers and urge their support of legislation that would prohibit teenagers from using indoor tanning beds.
While I was there I was moved by the story of a young Iowa woman who tanned as a teenager and was diagnosed with melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, at just 17.
She spoke of the challenges involved with undergoing cancer treatment while simultaneously finishing high school. She also shared that after five years in remission her cancer has just returned. She's now juggling college and treatments and hoping this time the cancer won't win. No one should have to go through what she's going through, especially when it can be prevented.
Using indoor tanning devices is scientifically proven to significantly increase a person's risk of developing skin cancer. It's particularly dangerous when it's done before the age of 35. In fact, tanning bed use done before that age increases the risk of skin cancer by 59 percent.
I would like to thank Sen. Liz Mathis for supporting and championing this legislation. Young lives are at stake here. Iowa can and must do better. For the young woman who shared her story and for all the potential young men and women like her, let's make sure this bill becomes law.
