Council agrees with request to ban alcohol at Daniels Park
Dec. 15, 2010 9:25 am
UPDATE: City parks officials want to ban the use and possession of alcoholic beverages in Daniels Park in northeast Cedar Rapids, and last night the City Council agreed on a 9-0 vote.
In a memo to the City Council, Daniel Gibbins, the city's parks director, says the request for an alcohol ban comes after local residents complained to the city about “negative and illegal activities connected to alcohol use” in the park. The Coe College Athletic Department, which has invested in and uses the park's baseball diamond, also has asked the city to ban alcohol in the park to protect students and the college's investment, the city memo states.
Gibbins notes that 25 other city parks among the city's 80-or-so parks do not permit alcohol use or possession.
