Nov. 19, 2009 9:54 am
Doug Schwab claimed one of three U.S. wins in a fresstyle dual between the U.S. and Russia last night at Cornell College in Mount Vernon. Schwab, although not thrilled of the pace of his match noting he should have pushed the action more, won, 1-1, 3-0, over Arsen Mairov at 145.5 pounds. The Russian squad won the meet, 4-3. Kyle Cerminara (211.5) and Blake Gillis (264.5) also won. Crossface chronicles has a feature and recap of the event.
Here is the first period of the Schwab match. Both Schwab and Mike Zadick are assistant coaches at the University of Iowa and competed Wednesday night. Schwab, an Osage native, was a national champion for the Hawkeyes, and was joined on the 2008 Olympic team by Zadick, a former Iowa All-American.
Schwab said he's building up to make an impact at the 2010 World Championships. A strong showing could start momentum to the 2012 Olympic Games. Here is the second period in his win against Mairov, a Russian National silver medalist.
Zadick dropped a 2-0, 1-0, decision to Vladimir Vilmov, 2009 Dave Schultz Memorial International Champion and 2005 European Junior champion. Zadick is ranked second in the U.S. behind Shawn Bunch. Here is the second period of his bout.
