In the summer of 1954, Cedar Rapids children were delighted to see something called the Playmobile pull into their neighborhood.
The city’s Playground and Recreation Commission pulled the portable playground into neighborhoods where kids didn’t have access to playgrounds.
The Cedar Rapids Jaycees came up with the idea to mount playground equipment on a trailer. But, first, they had to build it.
The materials were donated by local companies, and construction was supervised by the Iowa Electric Welding Co.
The Playmobile offered two swings, a slide and a merry-go-round plus softball equipment.
