Betty Ann Sass
(nee Peters) passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House. A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, June 14, at the
Cedar Memorial Park Westside Chapel. Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery will follow.
Betty was born Jan. 9, 1931, in St. Libory, Neb., to Henry and Irene Peters. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms, Neb., and the family moved to Iowa in 1941. She graduated from Central City High School in 1948. After her graduation, she worked at Killian's Department Store until marrying the love of her life, Willard "Bill" Sass, on July 23, 1950. Together, they raised four children, Sherry, Bev, Colleen and Dean, until Willard's untimely death in 1969. Betty proceeded to raise their children on her own with faith, strength and integrity, becoming an independent spirit.
After Willard's death, she began working at Jefferson High School, retiring in 1996 after a 26-year career. Betty was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1950 and was active in Home Missionary for 70 years.
Betty loved to dance (met her husband at Danceland) and belonged to the Eastern Chapter of the Polka Club of Iowa for many years. She took great pride in her house and yard, feeding the birds and enjoying a beer while watching Hawkeye basketball (actually, any and all college basketball games). Betty had a great interest in and admiration for her family, friends, church and the many people she met throughout her years of dancing and living in Cedar Rapids. She will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her four children, Sherry Waterman, Bev (Jim) Nowak, Colleen (Terry) Helland and Dean (Angie) Sass; her five grandchildren, Kari (Jason) Johnson, Kelly (Ben) Phelps, Andrew (Bex) Hurn, Kelsey (Tim) Schumacher and Courtney Helland; her four great-grandchildren, Natalie and Amy Johnson, Megan and Chloe Phelps; extended family, Jim (Angie) Nowak, Sam (Kylie) Nowak, Katie Nowak; Kristen (Jeff) Hindes, Emma and Lucy Hindes; one sister, Carol Light; sister-in-laws, Sharon Peters and Lavonne Sass; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Irene Peters; her husband, Willard Sass; her son-in-law, David Waterman; her sister, Lois (Chuck) Butler; her brothers, Wilbur (Kathryn) Peters and Virgil Peters; her brothers-in-law, Richard Light, Elmer (Rose) Sass, Donald Sass and Arlo Sass; and her niece, Lora Light.
The family would like to thank the staff at Stoney Point Meadows Senior Living for their kindness and attentive care as she transitioned to her new home last fall. The family would also like to thank the caring medical staff at Hall-Perrine, Mercy Hospital and the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House for making her visits exceptionally comfortable.
Memorial donations may be made in Betty's name to Trinity Lutheran Church and School.
