DES MOINES — Lisbon’s Kole Becker had a weekend to remember at the Class 1A boys’ state track and field meet.
Lisbon finished second in the team race with 57 points — Madrid won with 65.5.
Becker was responsible for 40 of the 57 points, thanks to his four state titles — two of which he won on Saturday at Drake Stadium.
The first title on Saturday came in the shuttle hurdle relay with Becker as the anchor.
“These guys kept it close and got me equal to start my leg,” Becker said of teammates Cohen Kamaus, Luke Czarnecki and Bryce Clausen. “I had to finish it for them. It was a great team effort.”
The Lions won with a time of 1:00.20, beating the Belle Plaine team of Ethan Hamilton, Connor Timm, Eli Ehlen and Ben DeMeulenaere, which finished in 1:00.64.
“It’s just a lot more fun because we can all celebrate together,” Becker said of winning a relay title. “We worked all season for this. It was just fun.”
Becker’s second title of the day and the fourth of the meet was in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Becker, a junior, won in a time of 15.06.
“I just came in here with nothing to lose,” Becker said. “This was my first year at the state meet and I had a good result.
“I definitely thought I was capable of getting all four. I’m at a loss of words right now. This is crazy.”
It wasn’t all Becker on Saturday for Lisbon, though. The Lions also won the 400-meter relay. The team of Will Bennett, Baylor Speidel, Kaden Caspers and Devyn Decious won in 44.60.
Decious, a senior, closed it out for Lisbon.
“It’s amazing,” Bennett said. “(Decious) worked his butt off the last four years and didn’t get the chance last year to do it. He deserves this.”
English Valleys’ Beau Flander won the 100-meter dash on Saturday with a time of 11.12
“It feels amazing,” Flander said. “It feels great to know that you’re the best out here in 1A.”
It wasn’t a feeling he had after his 200-meter race where he didn’t qualify for the finals on Thursday.
“This more than makes up for my 200,” Flander said. “This is the greatest feeling I’ve ever felt. I was really disappointed after the 200 but this completely makes up for it.
“The 200 definitely motivated me a lot. I felt like I let myself down and I felt like I let the people of our community down and winning the 100 makes it all better.”
