DES MOINES — Welcome to the Quad Squad, Audrey Biermann.
A junior at Western Dubuque, Biermann capped a brilliant weekend at the state track and field meet Saturday at Drake Stadium. She anchored the Bobcats’ sprint medley relay to a Class 3A girls’ title, then went solo in the 100 and 200.
“I always dreamed that something like this would happen,” she said. “It’s amazing that it came true. It feels so good.”
Toss in a 400-meter title Thursday, and Biermann was a quadruple champion.
“The 400 was probably the toughest one ... the 400 and the 100,” she said. “The sprint medley, I had total faith in my teammates.
“Right now, it’s just kind of a sigh of relief.”
Dubuque Wahlert captured the 3A girls’ team championship, compiling 59 points. Solon was second with 51, followed by Carlisle (46), Western Dubuque (42) and Davenport Assumption (41).
“We had a really good finish,” Solon’s Emma Bock said after the Spartans finished second in the final event, the 1,600-meter relay. “We got a lot of points that we weren’t expecting. Coach (Brent) Sands told us to do our best, do what we do.”
In the sprint medley, Biermann got the baton in second place, five meters back. She made up the deficit by the time she reached the front stretch, and carried it home in 1:47.58. Dubuque Wahlert was second in 1:48.55.
“I just tried to stay on (Wahlert anchor Rylee Steffen’s) shoulder,” Biermann said,” Biermann said. “I knew I could kick.”
Leadoff runner Ella Schindler said, “I knew she had it. We put so much time into this race.”
Sammy Recker and Brynn Walters had the middle two carries.
Biermann later struck gold in the 100 (12.37) and 200 (25.48).
Clear Creek Amana was the shuttle hurdle relay champion; Emma Mathis, Cileigh Smiddy, Kayla Jiras and Silvana Kabolo ran 1:05.39, winning by more than a second.
“Two years ago, we were 13th,” Mathis said. “This is a whole new world. I’m so happy to be part of this team.”
A sophomore, Kabolo had the lead when she took off, and built on it.
“I knew we had it,” she said. “I just needed to run smooth and not screw up.”
Solon was seeded No. 1 in the 4x400 and improved on its time, but Davenport Assumption came from behind to win in 3:56.77. The Spartans ran 3:56.92.
“I know we all wanted to go with a win in the 4-by-4. We wanted that big bang,” leadoff runner Kaia Holtkamp said.
Bock was third in the 800, and the Spartans were fifth in the sprint medley relay.
JoJo Tyynismaa of South Tama was the 100-meter hurdles runner-up.
