Anderson, Alice
Alice Anderson, 71, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, at the Hospice House of Mercy. A time of gathering will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.
Alice was born July 19, 1942, to Dale and Bernice Adams. She graduated from Mormon Trail High School in Garden Grove, Iowa. She married Gary Anderson in 1964 when they both were working at LOOK Magazine in Des Moines. They moved to Cedar Rapids in 1965 where she was employed by Merchants National Bank. Their son, Chris, was born in 1968. She graduated from Mount Mercy College in 1985. Alice joined the staff of the Cedar Rapids Convention and Visitors Bureau, where as director of tourism, she was an active promoter of Cedar Rapids, the Amana Colonies and the state of Iowa. In 1998, she received the Iowa Tourism Leadership Award. She worked with several Hollywood film companies as a location scout. She was a member of Junior League, the Cedar Rapids Public Relations Group, and a past board member of The History Center, Brucemore, the U.S. Cellular Center Commission and the Five Seasons Plaza Restoration.
Gary and Alice were members of First Lutheran Church and the Rathbun Yacht Club. She was an active crew member in many sailboat races, skiing in Colorado and around the Upper Midwest, canoeing Iowa rivers and biking Midwest trails.
She is survived by her husband Gary; her son, Chris and his partner, Ricky Ng of New York, N.Y.; and her brother, Neil Adams and his wife Verna of Juneau, Alaska.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her name.
