LAVERNE "VERNE" A. WILKINSON

LaVerne "Verne" A. Wilkinson passed away peacefully on May 20, 2021, surrounded by his family. Memorial services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Inurnment in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. There will be a visitation on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his two sons, Josh of Long Beach, Calif., and Michael (Estela) of Houston, Texas; his companion for more than 23 years, Dee Corell; four sisters, Carol, Elaine, Nancy and Kathy; two brothers, Larry and John; and countless friends.
Verne was born on Oct. 18, 1944, in Independence, the son of William and Verna (Peters) Wilkinson. He was a banker and had worked at Peoples, Norwest and at Wells Fargo for 27 years retiring in 2004. Most recently he was a driver for the Sisters of Mercy and supported them in their daily activities for eight years.
Verne was a star athlete at Independence High School, a veteran, an avid Hawkeyes fan and loved to make others laugh.
He fought to the very end and will be missed by all that knew him.
