By Sherri Benner: I was at work when I heard about the first two planes crashing into the World Trade Center. What touched me was the stories and aftermath that followed. I wrote a poem on Sept. 21, 2001, as a way of paying tribute to those who lost their lives and all the heroes we'll never hear of. That poem was part of an art exhibit through an art committee in NYC. The exhibit will travel to Washington, D.C., where it will remain as part as a tribute for 9/11. Below is the poem.
September 11, 2001
On September 11, 2001 our lives changed without our consent,
Within moments, thousands died as four planes made their final descent.
We were left with devastation that can never be measured;
Lives cut short, leaving only precious memories to be treasured.
As I think of the missing, those killed and all of the pain,
I wonder if America can keep the faith alive so all the deaths are not in vain.
There are many heroes that we will never hear of or see,
By being strong and pulling together we are keeping America free.
As I listened to all the stories and I focused on all of the faces,
I am aware more than ever that those lost are my brothers and sisters, regardless of their races.
Right now the future seems uncertain, but one thing will always remain,
God is with us, keeping us strong and that will always be the same.
America has been hit hard but together we will prevail,
Keeping in our hearts forever; the day the four planes fell.
