All people deserve the same marriage opportunities

This spell of sunny days reminds me of a beautiful wedding I attended on a bright afternoon in Cedar Rapids. The ceremony began with my two young friends facing each other, grinning, in the backyard of a small house they had purchased together the year before.
They repeated their vows, entering the path of sharing and caring, challenges and rewards, and all the possibilities newlyweds happily embrace. The law validated their entry into a loving and productive life together.
The guests cheered as the wedding officiator said, “I now pronounce you husband and husband.”
I'm proud to be an Iowan, living in one of only a few states that recognizes, legally, that all people deserve to have the same marriage opportunities. And I was proud to hear President Obama say that same-sex couples should be able to get married. His belief in a society where everyone can play by the same rules will give us all a brighter future.
That, too, is something worth cheering about.
