By Clara Hardiman: I hadn't turned on the TV, only a panicked call from my daughter, telling me to get my grandkids if they closed school. When I asked what was wrong, she just said, "Turn on the news."
I ran down the block to the school, where I was told it was optional to take the kids or leave them. I left them, voted (in the school board election) while I was there and only then went home to check the news.
My next door neighbors were carrying groceries into their house. "We just bought $400 worth of food !" they shouted.
Without that phone call, I would not have known a thing until the evening news at 6. It seemed so surreal. New York was another world until that day. Suddenly it was very close.
