Morrison, John
John Morrison, 67, of Iowa City, died Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at his home after a short illness. John chose to be cremated. His family will greet friends Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. Private scattering of his cremains will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Responders Harbour Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Sherree Smith, 5068 Shore Rd., North East Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada, BOT 1WO.
John was born Feb. 25, 1942, in Alta, Iowa, the son of Roger and Eunice (Fribourg) Morrison.
John grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in 1960.
He attended Iowa Central Community College and the University of Iowa. John served in the United States Marine Corps from 1960 – 1964.
He was a member of Stagehand's Local Union 690 (IATSE) since November 1980 where he worked productions and shows in Iowa City, as well as Chicago, Des Moines and the Quad Cities. He most often worked as head flyman at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City. He supported his vocation at union meetings and expressed his opinions when he saw fit. John retired Dec. 31, 2005.
John loved to garage sale and was always on the lookout for a bargain. He was a collector of strange and unusual facts – of which he was always willing to share. He was an avid story teller - all of which were true. John rode RAGBRAI in its early years and traveled the Big MACC canoe trip down the Mississippi River.
Survivors include his wife, Meg Baron; stepsons, Brian Baron (Wakako Wynkoop) and Robert Baron, both of Iowa City; stepdaughter, Janice Baron Fishel (Curtis Baron Fishel); brother, Tom Morrison of Fort Dodge; a nephew, Chris Morrison; and cousin, Jerry Kuhns.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
