Only Congress should be able to make war

When the Cold War ended, with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, I concluded that the likelihood of a nuclear apocalypse ceased to be significant. I thought 'What a wonderful achievement for the human race!”

I remember years earlier, while in junior high school, practicing for a nuclear attack. We would move quickly from classrooms to the inner corridors of our school buildings, lean up against the wall and pray that what we were practicing for would never occur.

President Donald Trump's recent threats against North Korea pulls us toward war and it seems that we once again must consider the possibility of a nuclear holocaust.

We can only hope that our elected members of Congress step forward and follow through on their oaths to uphold the Constitution.

I urge all Iowa members of Congress to co-sponsor Senate Bill 2047 and House Bill 4837, to keep our president from starting a war with North Korea without congressional authorization.
