Letter: Exercise patience when sharing roads

One would think news of bicycle fatalities in our state decreasing might be cause for celebration. But a recent post on these pages reflects the opposite feeling ('Restrict where bicyclists can ride,” Sept. 9).

The writer claims he has seen many more accidents on Covington Road due to the presence of bicyclists during the morning rush hour. Can the Linn County Sheriff's Office verify the increase?

As a bicyclist, it is almost certain that anyone riding self-propelled machinery on this stretch of road is an experienced cyclist, following all of the safe riding recommendations. They are not riding, nor should they be riding in a manner that encourages overcoming motorists to make passes within three feet. Close passing due to drivers' impatience is of concern to the bicyclist, the oncoming traffic and the overcoming traffic. It is safe for all concerned for an overcoming motorist to wait the extra half minute or less to pass safely so all can have a good day.
