The waiting may have been the hardest part for Miyako Coffey on Wednesday.
A popular lyric from the classic song by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, that line summed up much of the day for the Cedar Rapids Xavier senior at the Class 1A Region 6 meet.
Coffey faced little resistance in her four matches, dropping just two games, those coming in her 6-1, 6-1 win over Maci Sloane of Camanche in the title match at the Clark Racquet Center.
With Coffey making such quick work of her opponents, she knew there would be some down time. However, with wet conditions forcing the matches to be moved to the facility on the Coe College campus due to rain, the waits were even longer.
"I really had to keep myself energized and awake," she said. "I ate a lot of energy bars and tried to stay focused but this last match, it was hard to try and keep all that energy up."
Saints Coach Matt Foxhoven knew with the weather forcing the meet indoors with only four courts available, that it could end up being a long day.
"Early on, there were two to three hours between the time she finished up a match then got to play again," he said. "I'm sure finding ways to keep herself entertained, keep moving and not get stiff was difficult."
The important goal for Coffey and her teammates was to advance to the state tournament, set for June 2-3 in Waterloo. Xavier swept both doubles spots as Courtney Carstensen and Ally Burger downed teammates Ella Tallett and Avery Link, 6-2, 6-0, in the final.
Coffey, who will play at Hope College in Michigan next year, said her game is in good shape headed to state.
"I feel like my game is improving right at the time it should be," said Coffey, who won a state doubles title with Emily Jasper in 2019. "I think I have been playing well all season, but I think today solidified some of the things I have been working on.
"I'm satisfied, but I haven't peaked yet. I'm excited to see what the next two weeks might bring."
In other regional action Wednesday, Iowa City West's Ella DeYoung and the doubles team of Caroline and Julianna Mascardo won Class 2A regional titles at North Scott, advancing to state. DeYoung swept past Dubuque Senior's Riley O'Donnell, 6-0, 6-0 while the Mescardos took down the Senior duo of Natalie Kaiser and Maddie Sampson-Brown, 6-1, 6-1 in the doubles final.
At Bettendorf, Iowa City High's Sarah Dockery-Jackson defeated Sydney Thoms of Dubuque Hempstead, 6-1, 6-2 in the title match.
At Marshalltown, Cedar Rapids Prairie's Avya Bohr earned a state slot with her second-place finish. Iowa City Liberty's Ella Gilbert was the singles runner-up at Pleasant Valley and will be headed to state. Cedar Rapids Washington's doubles teams of Kathryn Zylstra and Katelyn Kock and Josie Norris and Mya Messenger both made the final at PV and will be in the state meet. Their regional final match was suspended due to rain and will be completed Thursday.
Other area 1A qualifiers were all in doubles. The Decorah teams of Mara Holland and Annalise Skrade and Morgan Brauer and Cady Peterson made the state field along with Union's sister tandum of Belle and Alexa Weber.
