Avenue and Oakdale Boulevard – including Yummy's Gourmet Cakes and Ghurtie's Gourmet Frozen Yoghurt Café – are cleaning up after vandals and burglars broke in overnight.
Seven businesses in the Oakdale Park at 2180 Norcor Ave. were burglarized between 11 p.m. Wednesday and 5:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Coralville police Lt. Shane Kron. The burglars forced entry into the businesses – breaking windows and doors, he said.
Store owners are taking inventory of what they lost, Kron said, and the police don't yet have an estimate on the damage and stolen goods. But, Kron said, “They hit it pretty hard.”
Nichole Wander, manager of Yummy's, told The Gazette that the burglars only went for the money and left the rest of the shop alone.
“But the office was destroyed,” she said. “They ripped the safe out of the floor and got the cash.”
She said they broke a window into the frozen yogurt shop next door and also hit the Falbo Bros. Pizzeria.
Police don't have any suspects at this time, and Wander said her business will be more prepared in the future.
“We'll be much more cautious and take more safety measures from now on,” Wander said. “It gave everybody a jolt. This is not what you expect in this neighborhood.”
