The Iowa Photo: Making the common abstract
A prairie spiderwort flower is seen May 12 at the Monarch Research Project in southeast Cedar Rapids. The plant is part of a 10-by-10-foot garden that shows what homeowners can do in a relatively small space to boost butterfly and other pollinator populations. “I love getting close to nature, especially flowers like this one,” Gazette photojournalist Jim Slosiarek says. “The close-up perspective and the use of a narrow depth of field turns something that’s common into abstract art. Late afternoon sunlight also helped bring out the textures in the flower petal.”
