To the editor:
Bruce Harreld is a refreshing step outside the academic box. It is not easy to depart from a 75-year-long status quo, but if the University of Iowa wants to stay ahead of the curve, it is necessary.
Higher education is evolving and we have to be ready for it. Harreld's leadership roles at Fortune 500 companies uniquely equip him for university leadership. There is much more to a university than the quality of its classrooms; huge budgets are in play, and major businesslike decisions must be made to keep a school afloat. Expertise in the corporate sector is just what UI needs to maintain its reputation as a cutting edge, research-centric school.
