Milkweed planter was mistaken

To the editor:
I hope the gentleman who wrote about tearing up his milkweed garden after a caterpillar infestation was kidding ('Attempt to help butterflies failed,” Aug. 9).
Milkweed is the sole source of food for monarch caterpillars and that was probably what he was seeing in his garden.
