Set aside all differences on Thanksgiving
The Gazette Opinion Staff

United we stand. Divided we fall. These were the Founding Fathers' words regarding the initial threat to our country's solvency. We were founded on tolerance in response to an intolerant empire.
On Nov. 13, my business received an unsolicited religious publication filled with radical, polarizing ideas to create fear and hatred. Hatred is the vehicle of terrorism ending in division and violence. All of us have differences on the outside and inside. Rather than looking at differences, look to our commonality. Reinforcing messages of tolerance and love that unite us is the best way to defeat terrorism.
Recent elections have focused on political differences and differences in sexual preferences. As we convene for Thanksgiving, remember the proclamation from President Abraham Lincoln in 1863:“ ... as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People ... to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.” This day was to acknowledge the blessings and prosperity bestowed on America.
If you believe in religion, acknowledge the God in America. If you do not believe in religion, acknowledge the good in America. For one day at least, set aside issues which separate us.
