Abbe Center instrumental in recovery process

Thousands of Iowans suffer in our cities, towns and rural areas from mental illness ranging from anxiety and depression to schizophrenia. Mental illness will affect one in five adults during their lifetime.
That's where the Abbe Center for Community Care (County Home Road site), which closed Sept. 30, was instrumental in the recovery process. I know this first hand. I suffer from mental illness and resided at that center for 18 months.
My life had deteriorated so profoundly that I was unable to shower or make myself a meal, I did not leave my house for nearly six months. I eventually made several attempts to end my life.
My doctor filed a commitment on me and I was sent for treatment at Abbe. They ran a tight ship. Medication at 7:30, followed by exercise, then classes. Classes gave my mind someplace to go. I had homework. I felt an inkling of feeling after being dead inside for so long.
It has taken me several years to recover, but I am now working part time, helping others and enjoying life again, and giving thanks to the Abbe Center for returning my life.
