Hanser, William F.
William F. Hanser, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully at The Meth-Wick Community/Manor on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, after a long illness. Memorial services: 3 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Dorothy; his children, Cathie (Richard) Blake, William A. (Paula) and Robert S. (Quynh); beloved grandchildren, Ryan and Matthew; and sister, Carla Martin.
Bill was born Aug. 4, 1921, in Highland, Ill., to Carl and Isabelle Hanser. He graduated from high school in East St. Louis, Ill., and received a B.S. degree in milling chemistry from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. He was active in a number of campus organizations, including Tau Kappa Epsilon and Alpha Zeta fraternities. Bill served as a first lieutenant in the coast artillery and infantry during World War II. He was wounded in combat during the Battle of the Bulge for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. Bill had a long and successful career with National Oats Co. spanning 39 years. He served in a number of executive positions and retired in 1986 as president and CEO.
He was active in a number of professional and civic organizations during his career, including the American Association of Operative Millers, American Association of Cereal Chemists, The Salvation Army, The Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Clubs of Cedar Rapids, Elks Club and St. Paul's Methodist Church.
We mourn the loss of a devoted and loving husband, proud and dedicated father and grandfather, wonderful brother and unwavering friend. A man who displayed selflessness and an inner strength to all who knew him. He espoused community team work and integrity to all whom he came in contact.
