Sorry day when dove hunting law approved

Democracy, majority rule - among the freedoms we fight and die for that help define our country and its people. We elect our representatives in good faith to do just that - represent all of us. But what took place recently was a deceitful misuse of power and betrayal of the public trust. They blatantly ignored the voice of the people and passed a bill to allow dove shooting in Iowa.
I became aware of this issue in 1997, and every year the proposal surfaced Iowans responded with resounding opposition. Yet despite this the issue would persist until the proponents led by Sen. Dick Dearden finally achieved their goal of putting this inoffensive bird in the cross hairs of the gun. They knew by public opinion that if it ever went to a vote it would not pass - so they found a way to sneak the bill through before there could be any opposition. And despite hearing the outcry of the people, Gov. Branstad signed it.
Perhaps a new state slogan is warranted: “Iowa, a place to shoot Doves for Dollars.” Kind of catchy and sure to fill the states coffers. Bravo, Governor, bravo.?Yes, many Iowans are angry that this bill passed, what should outrage us is how it was done. It may be easy for those responsible to ignore the will of the people, but it's not so easy to restore trust or respect. What a shining example of legislation to be remembered for, what a sorry day for democracy.
