Letter: Convert Jones to a 9 hole course

Cedar Rapids golf operations once again is in the red. Reasons given are reduced number of rounds and constant reseeding of Jones (usually the back 9). Their solution is to close a course (most likely Jones) and raise the rates. The main reasons people stop playing is slow play and cost.
Before closing Jones, why not convert it back to a 9 hole course similar to what it was, and eliminate leagues on it? Hole number seven would be the only hole subject to flooding and only in a severe flood. You now have a course available for nonleague golfers that would play fast.
This would address major reseeding issues and reduce annual maintenance costs. The back nine would become available for the proposed dog park.
Saint Andrews green fees are similar to city rates and they pay $65,000 plus in property taxes, (city courses are exempt from taxes) and still makes a profit. If they can do this, than certainly the city can find a good solution for the Jones problem. A mistake is being made by not taking public comments on the issue. If Jones does close and rates go up, I believe more golfers will take advantage of other local, less expensive options, thus continuing the downward spiral of higher costs and lost revenue. All concerned golfers should speak up.
