Walters, Melvin M.
Melvin M. Walters, 80, of Tiffin, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 11, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Melvin was born Feb. 23, 1932, in rural Iowa County, son of Fred and Nora (Wiebold) Walters. He grew up in Williamsburg, Iowa, and attended a country school. On Aug. 20, 1950, he married Mildred A. Moffit. Melvin worked several years at McCabe Equipment in Coralville. He was employed by Pyramid Services in Iowa City, where he worked until he retired in 1997, but then decided to go back to work for them, and was employed there part time until 2002.
Melvin was a pillar of his family. He, along with his wife, Mildred, raised five children while teaching them values, sharing his wisdom and strength. He had a great passion for the outdoors; hunting, fishing, horses, and John Deere tractors.
Melvin's legacy will live on through his family, which includes his wife of 61 years, Mildred; children, Janice (Dick) Lasky of Bonner, Mont., James (Deb) Walters of Coralville, Diane (Wayne) Nelson of Bonner, Mont., Beverly Vermace of Lisbon and Barbara Searl of Cedar Rapids; brother, Lawrence (Mary Ann) Walters of Iowa City; sister-in-law, Ruth Walters; 10 grandchildren, Brandon Walters, Bobbie O'Brien, JD Walters, Justin Vermace, Emily (Lasky) Bachuss, Cody Searl, Brielle Searl, Tyler Vermace, Jenny (Lasky) Toren and Sarah Lasky; and 17 great-grandchildren. Honorary mention: Gary Harding, Sophia Knudson and Tracy Unverzagt.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Nora Walters; two sisters, Velma Walters and Dorthea Gonterman; and his brother, Willard “Curly” Walters.
Melvin's unique character will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
