Canning, Terry D.
Terry D. Canning, 73, of Marion, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion. Family will greet friends one hour before the service at the church. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Inurnment: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, at a later date.
Survivors include his wife, Lu; children, Michael (Carrie) Canning of Cedar Rapids, William Canning of Marion, Catherine Canning of Brownsville, Texas, Vicky (Jon) van den Berg of Cupertino, Calif., and Thomas Canning of Hiawatha; eight grandchildren; and a brother, Michael (Judith) Canning of Washington, D.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Donna Canning; and brother, Tim Canning.
Terry was born Dec. 9, 1937, in Fargo, N.D., the son of William Myles and Gladys M. (O'Brien) Canning. He graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1955, and from North Dakota State University in 1959. On April 19, 1958, Terry was united in marriage to Lucretia Barrett in Fargo. He was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1960 to 1962. Terry worked as an engineering manager at Rockwell Collins for 34 years.
Terry was a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus and a Life Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He was always involved in volunteering, starting with his involvement in the ARC and most recently acted as a SHIIP counselor assisting seniors with their Medicare questions.
