Partisan gridlock hindering progress

To the editor:
The Sept. 26 letter 'Democrats do not support our interests” is partly true, but it is also true that Republicans do not support our interests either. One big problem our country has is partisan gridlock in Washington, D.C. Democrats and Republicans haven't been able to work together on many issues and now Republicans are unable to work among themselves on many issues.
I hope our next president will try to break the gridlock. The first step is to get the Republican members of Congress who represent blue states and the Democrat members of Congress from red states to come up with recommendations. They should introduce bills that would be in the public interest. Then the bills will be debated in the full House and Senate.
The next step would be to veto bills passed on near party-line votes. Only bills with bipartisan support should be signed.
Several individuals, Democrat and Republican, seeking the presidential nomination will try to break the gridlock. My first choice is Jim Webb, a Democrat who served in the Marines and fought in Vietnam. John Kasich and Marco Rubio are two Republicans I believe will try to get the parties to work together.
Remember this is the United States of America, not the Divided Republics of America or the Union of socialist Democratic States.
