Blietz, Vernon L.
Vernon L. Blietz, 91, of Lansing, formerly of New Hampton, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Graveside services, with military honors, will be 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at New Hampton City Cemetery in New Hampton. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements.
Vernon Louis Blietz was born Oct. 12, 1922, near Marcus, Iowa, the son of Albert and Lenora (Frese) Blietz. Vernon moved to the Cedar Rapids-Marion area and was a volunteer fireman for nine years. He became a professional fireman and worked through the ranks to become chief of the Marion Fire Department.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Doris of Lansing; sister, Joyce Laures of New Hampton; four brothers, Kenneth (Sandi) of Ventura, LaVern (JoAn) of Edina, Minn., Raymond (Helen) of Spain and Jim (Connie) of Council Bluffs; sister-in-law, Virginia Blietz Kotz of Marshalltown; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
