Police officer was fulfilling his duty

To the editor:
Regarding the April 23 letter 'High-speed chases have to stop now”:
What makes anyone think that a person who is wanted for a crime, and having been seen by the police, would simply go back to their address and wait to be arrested?
It is true that the police can run a license plate on anyone they have a reason to, but how do the police know the person registered the vehicle to their actual address? Someone who is wanted for a crime might keep on running, and might hurt someone else in the process of running away. The police have to at least try to apprehend people suspected of crimes.
If a person is desperate enough to avoid capture, they will leave their possessions behind and drive like crazy to get away. And not go home.
I cannot think of anyone who does not know that they are required to pull over on seeing flashing police lights. Public defense attorneys are provided by people who work so that suspects who cannot afford an attorney can have someone to plead their case. It is better to pull over and let the law run its course. To say, 'If the police did not do their job there would be no crimes” makes about as much sense as 'If there was no U.S. military there would not have been the Pearl Harbor or 9/11 attacks.” It is time to stop blaming the police for all of society's problems.
