Listen to will of all, not 7 on the court

Your June 27 editorial regarding the politics of same-sex marriage in Iowa deserves response. I agree that it appears unlikely that this issue will be voted on any time soon. And I also agree that it is not a major issue to most Iowans.

But your editorial continues a widespread misapprehension of the core issue: the persistent question of who is to rule in our state, and by implication, in our nation. Do we have a government that arises from the people, or are we to be ruled by a small group of unaccountable judges?

For more than 150 years, almost all Iowans thought that their Constitution did not countenance same-sex marriage. Suddenly, we learned from seven very wise people, that in fact, it does. At what point will we decide not to calmly submit to whatever the Iowa Supreme Court thinks it can newly discover?

I may be opposed to same-sex marriage, but I am willing to abide by the appropriately expressed will of Iowans. Do those in favor of same-sex marriage feel the same way? Then let's vote.
