Central campus serves school district well

I am a member of the board of directors of College Community school district. The board, at its February meeting, agreed to purchase 73 acres of land adjacent to its central campus. The land was purchased in accord with the district's long-standing policy of maintaining a single, central location for all of its buildings and facilities.
The availability of adjacent land is limited and this purchase is being made at a very reasonable price level to preserve the opportunity to add more buildings and facilities as needed in the future for the continued projected student population growth.
The board views this purchase a prudent and necessary step in assuring the continued existence of a single central campus. That policy provides significant instructional advantages over scattered facilities such as easier sharing of common facilities and personnel, and freedom from attendance boundary decisions. The single campus provides obvious, substantial cost savings in maintenance, transportation and administrative functions. Availability of the property allowed the board to respond to the concerns recently expressed by a citizen committee about the continued ability to maintain the single central campus.
