Performing well on the field not only helps the Cedar Rapids Kernels win baseball games, it helps many people off the field, as well.
Four local businesses have teamed up with the Kernels to donate money to various charitable organizations throughout the 2011 season. Each group pledges money ranging from $5-$25 when the Kernels score a run, strike out an opponent, steal a base, or hit a home run.
Cedar Rapids' charitable promotions program began in 2009 with CarePro Health Services' “Plating for Plates” campaign. Since then, AEGON, Millhiser Smith West Bend Insurance, and 7G Distributing have joined in the philanthropic endeavor.
This year's promotions include:
•“K's for Kids:” Every time a Kernels pitcher strikes out an opposing batter this season, AEGON donates $25 to Kids First.
•“Kernels Stolen Bases:” Millhiser Smith West Bend Insurance gives $25 to Camp Courageous every time a Kernels player steals a base at Perfect Game Field.
•“Plating for Plates:” Each run Cedar Rapids scores, CarePro Health Services makes a $5 contribution to Horizon's Meals on Wheels.
•“Home Runs for Heroes:” Whenever a Kernels player hits a home run at Perfect Game Field, 7G Distributing pledges $10 to Veterans Group.
Kernels hurler Daniel Tillman has helped raise the most money with his on-field performance. His 34 strikeouts equates to $850 for Kid's First. Not far behind are fellow pitchers Justin La Tempa (33 K's, $825), and Suammy Baez (30 K's, $750).
A combined $8,000 has been raised so far, and with nearly four months left in the baseball season, there's sure to be thousands of additional dollars raised each time the Kernels take the field.
