Nollsch, Mildred Eleanor (Horner)
Mildred Eleanor (Horner) Nollsch, 88, of Iowa City, died peacefully from complications of cancer on her 64th wedding anniversary, Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at Mercy Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Private family burial will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Millie was born March 29, 1923, in Akron, Colo., the daughter of Ernest and Frances (Fritz) Horner. She was raised in Brighton, Iowa and graduated from Brighton High School. Following high school she attended the Institute of Business in Davenport. From 1946 to 1948, she attended the Cadet Nursing program at the University of Iowa, where she met her future husband, Duane, an engineering student. Millie loved to dance and the couple would dance through the rest of their lives together.
Millie married Duane Nollsch on Feb. 1, 1948, at First United Methodist Church in Marion, Iowa. The couple moved east, where Millie practiced nursing in a hospital, doctor's office, and in private home care. In 1950, Millie and Duane returned to Iowa City. Millie worked at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics until starting her own family. Millie raised four children, who all graduated from City High School and the University of Iowa.
She was a member of Methodist Women's Church Circle, an avid knitter, bridge player, Sunday school teacher, garage sale shopper, and designed the family home of 48 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Ernest Horner; infant son, Douglas; and sister, Miriam.
She is survived by her husband, Duane Arthur Nollsch; brother, Harold Horner; sister, Ruth Lewis; children, Nancy (Bob) Holmes, Jackie (Paul) Kapke, Daniel Nollsch and David (Leslie) Nollsch; and seven loving grandchildren, Nathan, Beth (Russell), Rachel, Daniel, Jennifer (James), Travis and Matthew.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to First United Methodist Church of Iowa City or Mercy Hospice.
