To the editor:
The Gazette's Aug. 18 article 'Vernon says Blum is ‘bad news' on Social Security” reporting Monica Vernon's attacks on Congressman Rod Blum over Social Security begs the question: Just exactly what do the Iowa Democrats and Vernon recommend to preserve this program? Saving Social Security is critical for our seniors, but experts agree that it will be bankrupt in 30 years if nothing is done.
Congressman Blum has the courage to acknowledge the fiscal reality and seek honest bipartisan solutions to this real problem. Vernon and others like her are using scare tactics and political attacks instead of looking for real solutions. The claim that he is trying to 'dismantle” Social Security is pure bunk. Monica, what do you suggest? Ignoring the problem won't make it go away. Thank you, Congressman Blum for facing the reality and fighting to protect Social Security for our current and future seniors.
