Iowa City Police arrested 26 year-old Alajuwon Shamar Johnson in connection with the shooting death of Kylie Jo Perkins.
Police found the 20 year-old woman dead in her Iowa City apartment. A 911 call for a robbery Wednesday night led police to a wrong address. Officers eventually ended up at 1527 Aber Avenue. Inside one of the apartments, they found the body of Kylie Perkins.
After investigation, police say Johnson was illegally carrying a handgun when he went to Perkins apartment.
At some point, they both were involved with the mishandling of the semi-automatic handgun when it fired, allegedly striking Perkins in the upper torso.
Johnson said Kylie asked him to call for help, but he didn't due to active warrants for his arrest. He asked a friend to call for help, but the friend didn't give the correct information which delayed emergency responders.
Police say they also found crack cocaine on Johnson at the time of his arrest.
Johnson has been charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Possession of a Schedule Two Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver, Possession of a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance - 2nd Offense and Carrying Weapons.
