ESPN's Todd McShay says Adrian Clayborn and Ricky Stanzi's stock went down last week
Mike Hlas Nov. 17, 2010 2:50 pm
ESPN's Todd McShay didn't mince words about Iowa's Ricky Stanzi and Adrian Clayborn this week. He has them Nos. 1 and 2 in his "stock down" listing of college players trending up and down after Week 11 in the college football season. The link to the full article is here.
Excerpts:
Stanzi's pocket presence, decision making and overall accuracy are much improved in 2010, but his performance late in the loss to Northwestern was underwhelming at best. Stanzi appeared timid with his coverage reads and did not throw the ball with confidence during his team's final two drives. ...
While he has been a better all-around quarterback as a senior, Stanzi played better in pressure situations in 2009.
Clayborn ... There were a few things that were bothersome. The first was Clayborn's inability to finish on a few occasions. ... The second was Clayborn's apparently subpar conditioning in the fourth quarter, which has been an issue at times this season. ... The third was his disengagement skills. He took too long to get off blocks and was unable to make plays in the run game that most elite defensive ends with better hand usage typically make.
The good news for these two players: McShay isn't an NFL general manager, it's still five months until the NFL draft, and Saturday's game with Ohio State provides a big opportunity to offer a whole new set of images to process.
If it's any consolation, Iowa fans, The Big Lead has named OSU's Terrelle Pryor one of the five most disappointing players in college football this season. That's despite him being fifth in the nation in passing efficiency (Stanzi is third) and the quarterback of a 9-1 team. A passage:
He does not handle pressure. Against the two reputable defenses he's faced, Miami and Wisconsin, he has completed less than 50 percent of his passes. Pryor has the surroundings to be great (a formidable offensive line and talent at skill positions) but he's merely been pretty good and only against overmatched opposition. Whenever the Buckeyes have needed a spark to rouse them, it has been someone else.
We all have ups and downs
