Gladbrook man pleads to firearms charge

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Gladbrook man, who illegally possessed firearms last year after a domestic violence conviction, pleaded guilty this week to a firearms charge in federal court.

Jason Drew, 38, of Gladbrook, pleaded to one count of being a prohibited person in possession of firearms.

During the plea hearing, Drew admitted he had been previously convicted of two crimes punishable by more than one year in prison and domestic violence when he possessed two revolvers Feb. 26, 2020.

According to the indictment, Drew was convicted in 2009 of first-degree theft and second-degree theft in Tama County.

He also was convicted in 2016 of domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury in Tama County.

U.S. District Judge C.J. Williams will set sentencing after a presentence report is prepared. Drew remains in custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending sentencing.

He faces up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release following any prison time.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Tremmel and was investigated by the Tama County Sheriff’s Office, the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
