District 5 voters need to re-elect Justin Shields on Dec. 5. He has been our representatives on City Council for the past 12 years, and I have found him to be open and willing to discuss concerns pertaining to Cedar Rapids issues.
One example is the regional water retention basin between Balsam Dr. SW and 18th St. SW. He was instrumental in gathering public and private engineers for three meetings in our backyards. He helped negotiate our concerns and questions so the basin balanced nature and homes. The result is the basin has wild grasses, milkweed and 30 trees of various species for wildlife.
Another example is Hughes Park off Wilson Avenue. The park was a result of Justin hearing our concern. He was instrumental in getting the city to purchase 7.5 acres. He chaired several meetings for citizen input. Over the next five years the park will be developed as wheelchair-accessible and will have a play area for small children as well as flowers for all.
Justin is an honest and trustworthy representative. I encourage District 5 residents to vote him in for another four year term on Dec. 5.
