Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Father John Spiegel officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City.
Carl, the son of Carl J. and Margaret Lincoln Goetz, was born Jan. 24, 1928, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. He was a 1946 graduate of City High School. During his college years at the University of Iowa, Carl worked for two summers at Yellowstone National Park. He received his Juris Doctor in 1952 from the College of Law at the University of Iowa and his master's of law from the University of Michigan in 1956. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Carl was engaged in private practice in Iowa City and had served as Justice of the Peace and Johnson County Attorney. He was also employed by the United States Department of Agriculture.
Carl's family remembers the beautiful Iowa days of summer at the family's Century farm with the horses, dogs and gardening. Carl had a wry sense of humor and enjoyed managing the farm and time spent at the cabin.
The family extends their appreciation to the staffs of Legacy Gardens and Iowa City Hospice.
Carl is survived by his wife, Janet (Tobin), whom he married in 1958; their three children, Mary (Jim) Boutwell of Flower Mound, Texas, John Goetz (Traci Ojile) of Iowa City and Anne Goetz (Scott Siegling) of West Branch; and four grandchildren, Virginia Claire, Anne Elizabeth and Catherine Margaret Boutwell and Araminta Rose Siegling.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Margaret Brorby.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospital Foundation or St. Mary's Catholic Church.
