Salute the flag to honor military men, women

Flag etiquette: To salute, all people come to attention, citizens not in uniform place their right hand over their heart and men with head cover should remove it.
This year, as in many years past, I helped our American Legion Post present the colors in the hometown parades. I was honored to have my son and niece present the colors.
There were a lot of people that stood and saluted, clapped, said “thank you,” and that felt amazing. However, as we passed one person, she had a lost look on her face (as others stood). Yet another whole yard (of people) couldn't be bothered to put down their drink, and stand to salute when the flag came by. At this point of the parade, our color guard in 80-degree weather, full military uniform or color guard uniform, had marched more than 1 mile and yet you, as spectators, could not be bothered to stand for 30 seconds as we marched by.
This is not a political issue, it is an issue of respect for those men and women who gave, are giving and will give of their time and their lives.
