Siegel's building to be demolished, turned into parking lot
For now, the downtown will be getting a new parking lot with 20 to 30 spaces as a result of the Downtown District's purchase of the former Siegel jewelry shop at Third Avenue and First Street SE.
The District purchased the property with a $380,250 I-JOBS grant, which the District secured earlier this year to buy and demolish blighted properties.
Doug Neumann, president/CEO of the District, on Thursday said a portion of the grant remains to help purchase other properties adjacent to the Siegel's building.
For now, the Siegel's building will be demolished and converted to a surface parking lot.
The longer term plan is for the location and adjacent properties to be redeveloped, Neumann said.
