On June 11, 2008, residents along the Cedar River prepared for a mandatory evacuation from an imminent flood. That epic event forever changed us.
This year on June 11, hundreds of people gathered together not to converse about flood loss but to enjoy the Northwest Neighborhood Cruising Ellis Boulevard event with classic cars, live music and food. The streets were filled with people, more than 200 classic vehicles and fun. Owners took a chance on a first-time event promoted by a coalition of a neighborhood associations, flooded-affected businesses and churches to bring their prized possessions to the flood zone.
We all learned something that day. Those coming into the area saw rebuilding and recovery. Those who live here felt pride and accomplishment that we can promote our progress and our city in a positive manner.
There was a cheer from the crowd when asked if we should hold this again next year. A little boy hugging his third-place trophy won for hot wheel races told his dad this was the best day ever.
What a difference three years make.
