Kernels take final game from Bees, 6-2

Burlington, IA – The Cedar Rapids Kernels avoided the series sweep and took the final game of a three game series with the Burlington Bees, 6-2, on Friday night at Community Field in Burlington. Jeremy Cruz went 3-4 with a HR, double and 3 RBI in his first game back since coming off the DL earlier today.
Kernels starter Garrett Richards notched his seventh win of the year, allowing two hits over six scoreless innings and striking out four. Manaurys Correa worked the final two innings to earn his first save. Burlington starter Nick Wooley (2-6) allowed three runs on five hits over 5 IP in taking the loss.
Jon Karcich also homered, going 3-3 with two doubles and 2 RBI and Casey Haerther went 2-4 with a double and run scored. Jean Segura added an RBI single as the Kernels outhit the Bees 12-4. Mike Trout was 1-3 and stole his 45th base of the year. The win gives the Kernels a second half record of 8-7 and 51-32 overall. Burlington falls to 8-6 and 30-53.
The Kernels return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium and open a 9-game, 10-day home stand on Saturday, July 10th. It's Armed Forces Night, presented by the Milling Company. The Kernels will wear special camouflage jerseys during the game that will be sold via a silent auction with the proceeds to benefit the Freedom Alliance. All military personnel that show their military ID receive a discount at the Kernels Box Office. And following the game, enjoy a spectacular fireworks show, presented by the Milling Company, Z 102.9 and J&M Displays. Gates open at 5:30 pm and first pitch is set for 6:35 pm.
