Howard, Arthur 'A.J.'
Arthur “A.J.” Howard, 86, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at Living Center East, Cedar Rapids, following a long illness. Services: 1. p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where family will greet friends from noon until service time. Minister Russell Dobbins will officiate.
Survivors include four sisters, Rozellion Lipscomb, Rosalie Dawson, Barbara Smith, all of Cedar Rapids, and Flora Greer of Atwood, Tenn.; brother, Johnnie Howard of Milwaukee, Wis.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
A.J. was born June 17, 1925, the son of James Porter and Ophelia (Nesbitt) Howard in Atwood, Tenn. He served his country with the United States Army during World War II, receiving the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Medal and a Bronze Service Star. A.J. was honorably discharged in 1945.
A.J. worked at Quaker Oats, retiring after 26 years of service and then worked at the Palace Barber Shop part-time to enjoy the company of his many friends. He loved his family and enjoyed being around them.
