Fuhrmeister, William D. 'Bill'
William D. “Bill” Fuhrmeister, 77, of Iowa City, died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with the Rev. Mark Pries officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial, with military honors, will take place at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City.
William Dean Fuhrmeister was born Oct. 29, 1934, in Iowa City, son of William and Eleanor (Hurt) Fuhrmeister. He graduated from Iowa City High in 1953 and received his associate degree from Kirkwood. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953 and served in Korea. After his return to Iowa City, on May 5, 1956, he married Sandra Halferty at Zion Lutheran Church. In 1962, he began his career with the University of Iowa as a security officer. He worked his way through the ranks, retiring as director of Public Safety after 33 years of service.
Bill was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, the American Legion and the Eagles. He was an avid card player and very loyal Hawkeye fan. He also enjoyed his time outdoors working in the yard, and was always reliable when someone needed a hand.
His family includes his wife, Sandra; children, Susan and Tim Fuhrmeister; grandson, Phineas Fuhrmeister; sister-in-law, Mary Fuhrmeister; 13 nieces and nephews; and numerous extended family members.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Debra Marie; sister, Patricia (Joe) Driscoll; brothers, Keith and Ted (Marlene) Fuhrmeister; and his parents.
