Betty was born on May 17, 1949, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Max and Leta (Glaspey) Seaton. She graduated from Iowa City High School. On April 9, 1975, Betty married Richard Hellwig in Iowa City. Betty and Richard had two sons, Nathan and Phillip.
She was a homemaker whose house was always immaculately kept and was open to all. She was also a bookkeeper for The Knitting Shop, Wilson Sporting Goods, and Hellwig Electric in Iowa City. But her true calling was as a wife, mother and grandmother. Betty enjoyed going to her boys' and grandkids' sporting and music events. Go Little Hawks! She was affectionately given the nickname "Mama Jo" by the many friends of her sons that spent time at her house. She loved traveling to the Great Smoky Mountains, the beaches of North Carolina and National Parks. She also enjoyed listening to Jimmy Buffett, Dolly Parton, Elvis and a host of other great artists.
The family would like to extend their appreciation and thanks to Iowa City Hospice.
Betty is survived by her husband, Richard "Rick" Hellwig of Iowa City; sons, Nathan (Debbie) Hellwig and Phillip Hellwig, both of Iowa City; grandchildren, Madelyn, Georgia, Sam and Elizabeth Hellwig; brothers, Max (Nancy) Seaton Jr. of Solon, Tom Seaton of Hills, Todd (Jackie) Seaton of Riverside, Jim Seaton of Dubuque; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
