Maxa, Irene
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 16, 2012, for Irene Maxa, of Garland, Texas, formerly of Conroy, Iowa. Irene died at Baylor Medical Center at Garland on Sunday, May 13, 2012, following a sudden illness.
Irene Violet Maxa was born April 27, 1925, in Swisher, Iowa, the eldest child of Leo and Ethel Schropp Vanourney. She attended Swisher Elementary School and Cedar Rapids Roosevelt High School, Class of 1944. Irene married Guy Joseph Maxa on May 5, 1946.
Irene was a loving wife and beloved mother. Her Iowa gardens were huge and provided potatoes and canned vegetables to last year-round. Later she worked at the Crest Motel, Williamsburg, Iowa, for a little spending money. She spent her retirement in Texas, taking care of her dogs and flower beds.
Irene is survived by two sons and their wives, Gene and Sue Maxa of Sachse, Texas, and Terry and Makayla Maxa of Garland, Texas; and two daughters, Cindy and Jan Maxa, both of Garland.
Irene had six surviving grandchildren, Brian, Mark, Matt, Amanda, Joseph and Jeremy; and seven great-grandchildren, Lacey, Jake, Samantha, Brett, Blane, Mylo and Oscar.
A memorial service will be scheduled this summer at Gay and Ciha Funeral Home, Iowa City, details pending.
